Leg Vein Treatments
There are two types of veins that patients get treated; varicose and spider. Varicose veins do not pose any serious threat to your health, but they can cause swelling, pain and skin changes. Spider veins (telangiectasias) are tiny vessels visible under the skin. Many men and women have spider veins on their legs and faces and opt to have their appearance reduced.
Which treatment is suitable?
Laser and Pulsed Light treatments are taking dominance over sclerotherapy to treat varicose veins or spider veins. The principle is the same - a light beam is pulsed on the affected veins in order to close them and cause them to dissolve. Adequate heating of the veins is necessary if you want a successful light-based treatment.
Laser types
A variety of lasers and light sources are used to treat leg veins, especially varicose and spider veins. They are long-pulse alexandrite, long-pulse Nd, diode, Yag lasers along with intense pulsed light devices. These devices are used while the top skin layer is cooled with a cool gel or chilled air. Cooling reduces discomfort and lowers the risks of injuring the patient's skin.
How does this work?
During this laser treatment, light energy is transmitted with the help of a laser hand piece to the targeted vein in a series of short pulses. This light energy is then absorbed by the lining of the veins (blood vessels) and the blood in the veins. This leads to coagulation (clotting) of the blood due to the heat generated and it is subsequently absorbed by the body.
Any side effects?
Not really - the skin above the treated veins will bear a reddish, cat-scratch like appearance, which gradually disappears over a period of time.
After this treatment?
All patients are encouraged to resume their day-to-day activities immediately. The final result may not be visible for quite some time.
The number of treatments required
It really depends on the number of veins and the size. An average of 2 to 6 treatments is quite normal.
Risks involved with laser therapy
The risks involved with laser treatment are minimal; however, it's best to consult your doctor before proceeding with treatment. If the clinic uses a quality cooling system it will be relatively pain-free. During the treatment your eyes are protected to avoid any damage.
