Birthmark Treatments
Skin markings that are present at birth or develop after a period of time can be defined as birthmarks. These birthmarks can be put into two categories: coffee and cream birthmarks and port-wine stains birthmarks. Port-wine stains (vascular birthmarks) are caused when there is a large concentration of blood vessels in a particular area. Occasionally, if these are found on the eyelids, side of the face or forehead, there are increased risks of seizures and glaucoma.
Why the need for laser treatment?
With the advent of high-energy pulsing lasers, the removal of birthmarks can be handled with ease and precision. One great benefit of these laser treatments is that they are almost pain-free.

In birthmark removal treatments, the lasers work by lightening the affected areas of skin in an attempt to even out the skin tone and make the birthmark less visible to the naked eye. As the laser beam penetrates the skin surface, the darkened areas are lightened causing the birthmark to become less noticeable.
What is the time factor for this treatment?
This laser treatment can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on the extent and size of the patient's birthmark. Port-wine birthmark removal treatment will require several procedures that are spaced months apart.
What about pain?
The pain factor is relatively less in laser removal of birthmarks. Adults can afford to take this treatment without using any anaesthesia. Some amount of anaesthesia is necessary for younger children. Most individuals mention little or no discomfort during this procedure.
